The
ancient lovely O Antiphons traditionally
prayed during Advent give us marvelous insight
into the liturgical season. On December
16th the Church prays:
|
| O
Wisdom, who proceeds from the mouth
of the Most High, reaching out mightily
from end to end, and sweetly arranging
all things; come to teach the way
of prudence. |
|
How apropos this antiphon is in our consumer
driven culture, where we are constantly
bombarded with the ideas of having the newest,
the biggest, and the best of everything.
During this Christmas season the antiphon
reminds us of the benefit of the virtue
of prudence: care, caution, and a good judgment,
as well as wisdom in looking forward. Allow
prudence to guide our Christmas purchasing.
If our means are limited let us remain within
them and if our means are substantial let
us consider the plight of the less fortunate.
The greatest gift we can give our loved
ones is the gift of acceptance, attentiveness,
and time from our busy schedules.
Fill the season with prayer, patience, and
simplicity as we await the birth of Christ
in our hearts and homes. Advent is a most
advantageous time to deepen our relationship
with God, our children, and one another.
Be still, block out the incessant noise
that is the background music of our daily
life, and just listen for God’s personal
words whispered into your ear. His message
is always one of unconditional love and
acceptance.
During this blessed season my wish for you
and your family is peace: in our world,
in our homes, and in our hearts. As your
family lights the candles of the Advent
Wreath may the true spirit of Christmas
be reflected in your children’s eyes
and may our newborn Lord be sweetly arranging
all things.
