| Dear Parents, |

As we travel on our Lenten journey it
is helpful to remember that this season
is a gift of grace from God to His beloved
children. The ancient Greeks had several
words for Love; the love of God was labeled
agape, an unconditional, self-sacrificing
love that forgives all transgressions.
To know that our Creator loves us to this
extent is liberating, yet a burden of
responsibility is placed on one who is
deeply loved. As we turn to God in simplicity
and sincerity, our hearts are heavy as
we contemplate our sins, but we are also
confident in the mercy and forgiveness
of God. Thus we ready ourselves to approach
the joy that is Easter.
As parents you understad well the concept
of agape. Your unconditional
love for your children is obvious, they
come to school cherished and well cared
for in every way. Your sacrifices have
enabled them to immerse themselves in
the three great practices of Lent-prayer,
fasting and almsgiving. Their generosity
to the poor and toward each other is a
reflection of your generosity toward our
Franciscan sisters and community. You
freely give of your talents and your treasure
to ensure the future of Saint Francis
Academy.
The Irish poet John O'Donohue wrote,
Behind every face there is something eternal
going on, this truly describes your
children as they converse with God. I
see in them a deep faith, reverence and
personal dignity as they meet our Lord
in prayer. Each morning a different class
attends Mass, on Fridays the Stations
of the Cross are prayed, and Eucharistic
Adoration on the first Thursday has proved
edifying for all. But it is the eighth
boy who requests time in the chapel after
lunch, the sixth grader who prefers to
kneel throughout the rosary when everyone
else is sitting, and the first grader
who kisses a picture of Mary that reveals
the depth of the children's life. I feel
great hope for the future of our Church
and Catholic education as your children
reveal the possibilities and beauty of
this Lenten season.
